“A CANDLE DOESN’T LOSE ANYTHING BY LIGHTING ANOTHER CANDLE.” Dr. Mrs. Nagamma Keshavamurthy (fondly called Nagamma Aunty) is the Mother Teresa of Davanagere. A loving daughter of M N Raman and Sakamma, daughter-in-law of the Channagiri family in Davanagere, and the adoring wife of respected Rotarian Sri C Keshavamurthy. She is also the mother of two sons, a caring mother-in-law, a fond grandmother, and a living ray of hope to many women.
“OPPORTUNITIES DON’T HAPPEN, YOU CREATE THEM.” Dr. Nagamma Keshavmurthy led her life true to these words. Along with her growth and achievements, she made way for all like-minded women. "Grab the opportunity, never let go, move on, be brave, nothing is impossible, never look back" - these are her famous words that motivate many women even today.
A clean-handed politician who served as Education Minister and Small Scale Industry Minister of Karnataka, and a magnanimous Inner Wheel member. She is the Charter President of Inner Wheel Club, District Chairman in 1986-87. Among all her accolades, she was awarded the Margaret Golding Award in the year 2019-20.
“Vanita Samajaa,” the dream child of Dr. Nagamma with the motto – “Service is our duty,” is an example of her dedication and determination. Today, there are 50+ children development and women empowerment wings under Vanita Samajaa.
Some of the wings under Vanita Samajaa are - “Prerana” for women entrepreneurs, District Child Welfare Council, Engineers Forum, Doctors Forum, Viha Environmental Forum, Ashraya Anand Dhama - an old age home, Premalaya - an orphanage, Snehalaya - a working women’s hostel, Vimochana - vocational training for deaf and dumb girls, Sahas - speech therapy for children, etc.
Karnataka State Akkamahadevi Women’s University, Vijapura, conferred an honorary doctorate upon Mrs. Nagamma Keshavamurthy for her service to society. She has done justice to the word service. The doctorate is a feather in the cap of her many laurels and achievements. Her discipline, clarity of thought and speech, dedication, have made her extraordinary. Her focus on the tasks ahead with performances and productivity are keys.
With another motto of “Womb to Tomb,” she never leaves any stone unturned in the field of service even with the toughest work in the blink of an eye. Truly, she has a magic wand.
She has traveled extensively both in India and overseas. During her travels, she has met some famous personalities viz: Mother Teresa, Satya Sai Baba of Puttaparthi, the British Queen, Kiran Bedi, and many more.
“HE ALONE LIVES, WHO LIVES FOR OTHERS (Swami Vivekananda).” Once we are born in this world, we need to give back. This is her belief.
